Name Pillow Tutorial

I finally found some time to write up the tutorial for the Name Pillows that I made for the family for Christmas.IMG_6462 - Version 2 IMG_6465 - Version 2

You will need:

2 different knit fabrics (one for the pillow, both sides and one for the letters) – my pillows are approximately 16″ square so I had enough of the pillow fabric for two of those and enough of the backing fabric for one 16″ square.

I made my pattern out of cardboard.  Since I wanted my finished pillows to measure 16″ and I was planning on a 1/4″ seam allowance, my pattern was made to a 16 1/2″ square.

I just used an old box for the pattern – nothing fancy.  This is how I usually make simple patterns.

The backing fabric should be a good contrast to the pillow fabric.  Here I am using the turquoise fabric for the pillow and the white for the contrast.

I placed the fabrics in a pile and traced the pattern out.

Lay it on the fabric and trace around.

After you have your fabrics laid out, place the pattern on the fabric and…

Cut on traced lines.

Trace around the pattern, then cut along the traced lines.  You will have your pillow shape.

Write the name on the pillow.

Pin one pillow square on top of the contrast square, leaving the remaining pillow square for later.  Write the desired name on the pillow leaving enough space in between the letters to create “bubble” letters later.  I wrote mine on the diagonal from corner to corner, but you can write it any way you would like.  After the name is written, go back and draw more lines on the outside of the original letters so that you have something that looks like the above.

Stitch on the outlines.

Stitch on the outlines of the letters.  You need enough room inside the stitching line to cut that fabric.

Cut out the top fabric inside the stitching lines.

Once you have stitched the outlines, cut the top fabric only leaving the contrast fabric to “shine” through.  Repeat for the rest of the letters.  Then sew the back of the pillow to the front of the pillow, right sides together – leaving an opening for stuffing.  Turn right side out and stuff pillow to desired firmness and sew the hole closed.  TA DA!!  You have your finished Name Pillow!

It’s pretty simple and makes a big statement!  Have fun!
