June HQAL Update

It’s that time!  Time to update on how I’ve been doing on the project that I’ve chosen for my hand-quilt-a-long.  The project I’m working on is called Grandmother’s Flower Garden.  I have a few more “flowers” complete and at the end a question (I need some advice).img_9777

Number one flower.  I love these little cats and I’ve now used that fabric to patch a pair of my favorite gardening pants.img_9781

Number two flower.  As you can tell, I’ve deviated from flower fabrics.  I’m just sewing whatever makes me happy at the time.img_9779

Flower number three.  I love these bunnies so much!  I also used this one as a patch on the same pair of gardening pants even though there wasn’t a hole to mend.img_9783

Flower number four.img_9785

Flower number five almost complete.  I’m having a bit of a challenge with sewing the white fabric – it’s a little thicker than all the rest and my fingers hurt.  I’m sure they will toughen up as I keep sewing!

I couldn’t help but do a close up of these hexis!!  Now onto my question:img_9786

That configuration of flowers looks a little odd.  Have I attached them strangely or do I just need to add another one in the middle right over the orange and purple flowers?

It would be good for you to know also that this will no longer be a quilt for the bed.  I knitted one right after my husband and I were married and that one is on our bed right now (almost 29 years later).  My husband is quite attached to it and does not want another one, he very much likes the one that is there.

I have decided that this will be a table covering (I’m open to someone telling me this isn’t a good idea)

And now the details of this HQAL:

This Hand Quilt Along is an opportunity for hand quilters and piecers to share and motivate one another. We post every three weeks, to show our progress and encourage one another.  If you have a hand quilting project and would like to join our group contact Kathy at the link below.

  1. Love your blocks. I can’t give any help on whether the configuration is odd or not, sorry.

  2. I have never done the flower garden pattern so I will bow to the comments of those who have on your question. I have seen lots of photos with quilts on tables – a very country look so I think it would be wonderful. I love the animal fabrics you have chosen. All your blocks are gorgeous!

  3. Hi,
Beautiful flower blocks…I’ve never made a Grandmother’s Garden quilt so I can’t help
you with your question..I’m sure someone out there will…if not google for the
answer..that may lead you to a you tube video that may help..have a great day!

  4. I think it needs another one where you said. Usually, there’s an in and out along the border. Without seeing the whole piece, I can’t be positive, but it would be my guess that you do need one. If you’d like to e-mail me a picture of the whole layout, maybe I can tell you more. =) I really like your flowers, and the faces and non-floral pieces are just great! Husbands are so funny. My husband always wanted the one I finally made him on our bed, too. I still have it, but I don’t use it now. I don’t see why making this a table cover won’t work just fine.

  5. I agree with Susan, I think you are “missing ” a flower, but a photo of the entire thing would make it clear to me. Love the bunnies and kitties, and your hand piecing stitches are to die for!!!

    • That’s high praise from you! I’ve come a far distance in my hand stitching since I started this. Thank you for this HQAL, without it I wouldn’t have started my flower garden.

      • You are so very welcome, Connie, we are glad to have you with us. I doubt I’d even attempt to hand quilt anything had it not been for having this group!

  6. Those bunnies are just so stinkin’ cute!

  7. Your garden is growing!! I love the fussy cut centers. It is looking great but you could always play with adding another flower. You are putting way too much effort in this garden to not just love it in the end😊❤️❤️

  8. I think your flower garden needs another ‘flower’ in that space, too. Your little bunnies make me smile. This quilt is going to look amazing showcased on your table.

  9. Your new flowers are lovely!!!

  10. Carla Therrien

Oh your fussy cut fabrics are really making these flowers so special!

  11. Love those Cat’s! Your EPP stitches are so neat! Yup you will need another flower in the middle!
